Cape York Peninsula Family
Families across Cape York Peninsula can find practical opportunities to learn, play and seek culturally responsive health support. Cooktown Library offers regular activities for young children and primary school-aged kids, while Apunipima supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in several Cape York communities.
📚 Play, learning and school holiday activities
Cook Shire Libraries — family programs
At Cooktown Library, First Five Forever Storytime gives children aged 0–5 and their carers a regular opportunity to enjoy stories together, every Wednesday at 10 am. Children aged 5–12 can build and create at the free Saturday Lego Club, held from 9.30 am to noon. A responsible adult must accompany participating children. Craft, STEM and Lego activities are also scheduled during school holidays, giving families extra options outside the school term.
❤ Child, maternal and family health
Apunipima Cape York Health Council — Child, Maternal & Family Health
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families can access child and maternal health services through Apunipima in Cape York communities including Aurukun, Coen, Hope Vale, Kowanyama, Mapoon and Napranum. Support includes child health checks, immunisations, postnatal care, family planning, and social and emotional wellbeing services. The Baby One program combines clinic and home visits from pregnancy through a child’s first 1,000 days. Contact your local Apunipima clinic to ask about access and appointments.
📌 Before you go

- Confirm that an activity suits your child’s age and whether a parent or responsible adult must stay.
- Ask about accessibility or individual participation needs when making an enquiry.
- For health services, contact the relevant local clinic about appointments and access arrangements.
